About this Collection

Unlabelled ‘MARBIG’ Folder.

Contained in a clear A4 Sheet Protector, and with a sticker stating “Circa 1989   No ID   Demolition of Old Huts Chermside and the vacant site”.

ITEM 9276 is a series of 11 colour photographs, all 152mm x 101mm, showing the demolition of the old training huts, which were numbered 8, 9, and 10.  The date isn’t shown, but must have been in the 2nd half of 1989.  There is no information on the back of the prints, and no Negative information.

During the 1960’s and 70’s Hut 8 was used as a locker room, with a canteen at one end, Hut 9 was used for metal work training, and Hut 10 was the “Subs Install” instruction room.

These huts were sited on the opposite side of the main entry driveway to the newer buildings which were built c.1965 and extended c.1975.

The remaining 2 old huts sited along the front of the Banfield Street property must have been demolished shortly after the 3 huts shown in the photographs.

The demolition was necessary to provide the space for the ‘New’ Training School building, for which the construction started in 1990, and completed in December 1990.  The new building cost $15 million and was officially opened 2 July 1991.
